Every instance may not fully address each of the SMPs. Or maybe the materials have students make sense of problems, but never have sufficiently challenging problems where students could learn to persevere in solving problems that take them outside of their comfort zone. For example, you may find instructional materials that only have students critique the reasoning of others, but never actually construct an argument of their own. It is also important that materials attend to the full meaning of each of the SMPs. Other SMPs should be seen through the year, but depending on the grade level, some will be seen much more than others as called for in the content standards. Certain SMPs, like “make sense of problems and persevere in solving them” or “attending to precision,” are overarching practices that we can and should see woven through a large portion of the year. Actually, it is not intended for the SMPs to be uniformly distributed over the work that students do. While it is important to ensure that the SMPs are embedded into the lessons, we must also remember that you should not see, nor is it realistic to see, each of the SMPs in every lesson. However, this time should still have a meaningful connection to the content standards and should help to further or deepen student understanding of the content. For example, you may want to spend time focused on constructing a viable argument and critiquing the reasoning of others. This should not give you the idea that materials should never explicitly focus on one of the SMPs. As we look at instructional materials we need to be watchful and look for materials that purposefully connect the SMPs to the content. This connection between the SMPs and content is so critical that the SMPs are embedded into the Common Core State Standards. It is important that the SMPs above are embedded within lessons and activities throughout the year. One of the first things we need to realize is that the SMPs are not meant to be stand-alone elements in any set of instructional materials or curriculum.
![]() The presence of swelling in the snuff box is variable, as some cases present with no swelling. ![]() Signs to watch for in an associated scaphoid fracture include tenderness to direct palpation over the anatomic snuff box, swelling, and pain with wrist and thumb movements, as well as with gripping activities. This fracture can be sometimes overlooked due to the more pressing displacement of the distal radius. This is also the direct mechanism of fracture of the scaphoid carpal bone. The most common mechanism of injury for a distal radius fracture is a fall on an outstretched hand, or FOOSH injury. I chose to focus this post on the following common forms of chronic pain after distal radius fracture: Scaphoid fractures, TFCC tears, Distal radioulnar joint instability/ulnar impaction syndrome, carpal instability and Extensor Pollicis Longus rupture. Post-traumatic arthritis is common, yet takes longer to set in and may occur after discharge from therapy. Vascular injury and nerve injury can occur, however these are most likely to be picked up by the referring physician before they enter your clinic. These injuries are not always managed by a specialized hand surgeon, so it is important for therapists to be aware of some of the more common complications following this fracture. Whether these fractures are intra- or extra-articular non-operative or post-operative, complications following this fracture often arise. One of the most common fractures seen, comprising about 13% of all fractures, is the distal radius fracture. With these weather conditions comes an increase in the amount of slip and fall injuries seen by doctors and therapists. It is the time of year (at least here in the Northeast United States) where snow starts falling and the ground becomes icy.
